PETALING JAYA: Anwar Ibrahim tonight expressed regret that foreign minister Hishammuddin Hussein did not attend a special session of the United Nations General Assembly to discuss the ongoing conflict between Palestinians and Israel.
The meeting is currently being held in New York.
Anwar said he was disappointed that Hishammuddin had instead sent the Malaysian envoy to the general assembly in his place.
“I demand a full explanation from the foreign minister,” the opposition leader said in a tweet.
He added that Hishammuddin’s counterparts from Turkey, Pakistan and Indonesia were all reported to be in New York for the special session.
The latest flare-up in the Gaza Strip has now entered its 11th day.
According to reports, 230 Palestinians, including 65 children and 39 women, have been killed and more than 1,700 wounded in aerial bombardments since the fighting began on May 10.
