The Kluang Medical Second Battalion has set up additional clinical support facilities for the Kepala Batas Hospital.
According to Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, the army has set up a “field ICU”, along with laboratory and radiology units.
The additional facilities can be used to treat 27 critical Covid-19 patients, as these would have life support equipment as well.
According to Bernama, Commanding Officer Lt-Col Dr Mohd Zamri Deraman said the Health Ministry will be running the new facilities and they will be assisted by two army anaesthesiologists.
This is the third field medical facility that has been set up by the military after Padang Perdana in Kelantan and Kapit in Sarawak.
However, the facility in Kepala Batas on mainland Penang would be the first time the army has set up a field Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for Covid-19 cases.
Twelve ICU beds are in special containers while another 15 will be placed in tents.
Penang has seen an average of 264 new Covid-19 cases over the past 14 days. - Mkini
