PETALING JAYA: Police are investigating former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad over allegations that the former prime minister violated Covid-19 SOPs while attending an event in Langkawi last Saturday, Utusan Malaysia reported.
The investigation was launched after a video showing Mahathir failing to scan the MySejahtera QR code or record his body temperature was uploaded to Facebook, Langkawi police chief Shariman Ashari said.
“A check found that it happened on the morning of May 8 at Surau Raudhatul Jannah, Kuala Teriang, Langkawi,” Shariman was quoted as saying by the Malay daily.
He added that the investigation would be conducted in accordance with Section 269 of the Penal Code and Regulation 16 of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures) in Local Areas of Infection 2021.
Earlier today, Mahathir admitted to violating the SOP while attending an event to present donations to people at a surau.
“I apologise for not complying with the SOP. I will accept action in accordance with the relevant laws,” the Langkawi MP said in a statement.
“I was informed at the event, I had violated the SOP by not taking my body temperature when entering the surau.
“This is a mistake. This should not happen,” he added. - FMT
