Cops to summon 8 over Fahmi Reza solidarity gathering

The police want to question eight people for attending a solidarity gathering for artist-activist Fahmi Reza.

The gathering was held on April 24 outside the Dang Wangi district police headquarters after police detained Fahmi overnight.

The eight include one federal lawmaker, two PSM leaders, and five civil society members.

They are Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil, PSM deputy chairperson S Arutchelvan, PSM central committee member M Sivaranjani, Suaram executive director Sevan Doraisamy, youth activist Wong Yan Ke, Article 19 Malaysia programme officer E Nalini, Edict executive director Khalid Mohd Ismath, and activist Numan Afifi Saadan.

When contacted, Dang Wangi district police chief Mohamad Zainal Abdullah told Malaysiakini they were being investigated under Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.

The section stipulates that organisers need to notify the police of an assembly 10 days before the date of the event. If not, they could be fined a maximum of RM10,000 if convicted.

Fahmi Fadzil tweeted this evening that he will be questioned next Tuesday (May 4) at 11am. He previously promised to cooperate with the police probe.

When contacted, Wong said he and the others will be questioned the next day (May 5) also at 11am.

“We have requested the Investigating Officer to give us the 111 notice before we go to the police station,” he told Malaysiakini.

Section 111 of the Criminal Procedure Code 2012 states that a police officer must obtain a written order to require the attendance of any person who might be involved in a case that is under investigation.

Police previously arrested Fahmi to investigate a Spotify music playlist he made which featured Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Hajah Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah on its cover.

He was later released after being detained overnight.

The playlist was entitled “This is Dengki Ke?” which alludes to a comment the Queen allegedly made on Instagram.

The Bukit Aman Classified Criminal Investigation Unit is probing Fahmi under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

His arrest was criticised by NGOs like Bersih, Amnesty International Malaysia, and the Centre for Independent Journalism as an attempt by the authorities to silence dissent. - Mkini
