Covid-19 traps over 30 children in Kajang orphanage

A Covid-19 outbreak at an orphanage in Kajang, Selangor has left over 30 residents trapped with little means to survive after the death of one of its owners, known as Tok Ayah, while his wife is also currently being treated at Sungai Buloh Hospital.

The Pertubuhan Kebajikan Anak Yatim Ummi houses 35 boys and girls, 26 of whom have also tested positive, according to a neighbour, Azaad Mohammed Umar, who made the call to raise funds.

As of last night, Azaad said their total collection has exceeded an initial RM15,000 target, but the fundraiser was continued to assist with the purchase of medications for the children.

The initial amount was intended to pay for catering services three times a day, for 30 people over at least 20 days, with the food packed and delivered directly to the orphanage.

He said donations in the form of bottled water and snacks are also welcomed.

In the absence of both their caretakers, Azaad said the children were left without supervision, even without anyone to cook their meals.

The oldest boy is 16 years old while the oldest girl is 19.

Azaad said the couple's children who assisted in running the orphanage were also unable to enter the premises, as they were positive for Covid-19 and were under home quarantine.

"Ummi's son-in-law comes by from time to time to check on the kids, but only from the outside because no one is allowed on the premises," he said on Facebook.

One of the couple's daughters has been put in charge of the fundraiser.

On Twitter, Azaad's call for urgent help was answered including by Bangi MP Ong Kian Ming who told Malaysiakini his office will be checking on the matter. - Mkini
