MP wants Education Ministry to tackle 'unsafe' schools for girls

Petaling Jaya MP Maria Chin Abdullah wants to see policy change from the Education Ministry amid complaints of inappropriate behaviour by teachers towards schoolgirls.

In particularly, Maria highlighted the case of 17-year-old Ain Husniza Saiful Nizam, who complained about her teacher making a rape joke to students.

“What Ain has brought to light on the issue is a matter of fixing the education policy,” she said in a statement.

Education Minister Mohd Radzi Md Jidin had said the incident was being investigated and action will be taken against the teacher if the claim is proven.

Maria said schools are supposed to be a safe space for children.

She also asked the Education Ministry to disclose what measures are being taken to ensure Ain’s safe return to school.

“What actions have been taken by the school to ensure the school environment is safe for all students and for Ain to return back to the school?” she said.

Ain had received some backlash from the school for her revelation on grounds that it “tarnished” the school’s name.

A classmate who chastised Ain for her revelation had even threatened to rape her. The classmate had since apologised.

Some on social media, including individuals whose accounts list themselves as teachers, have also made lewd comments about her for coming forward. - Mkini
