PETALING JAYA: Singaporeans have been praised for their courage in raising S$262,000 to pay defamation damages to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong for a blogger sued by Lee.

The blogger’s lawyer, Lim Tean, said in a Facebook posting that his client, Leong Sze Hian had managed to raise the money through crowdfunding.

According to the Straits Times newspaper, Leong was sued for sharing an article by a Malaysian website that falsely linked Lee to the 1MDB scandal.

In March, the Singapore High Court ruled that Leong’s sharing of the article amounted to publishing it even though he did not add any captions or commentary.

His lawyer posted an image of the cheque and the contents of a letter he sent to Lee’s lawyers.

In the letter, he said he wanted Lee to be aware that “every cent” of the amount had been donated by the people of Singapore.

“Your client may have won in a court of law, but this cashier’s order is proof that he has lost decisively in the court of public opinion,” Lim said.

Another blogger sued separately by Lee had previously also raised most of the S$150,000 damages through crowdfunding. - FMT
