A Terengganu executive councillor who was fined RM2,000 for violating the standard operating procedure (SOP) against Covid-19 explained that he did so after a crying mother called him to say her son wanted to eat satay on Hari Raya.
Hanafiah Mat (above), who is in charge of welfare, women development, family, and national unity in the state, said he personally cooked the satay and delivered them to the family, resulting in the SOP violation.
"I accept the compound against me by the police but if we look at the incident on Hari Raya morning, a mother called me and cried to say that her son, whose father has died, wanted to eat satay.
"Then, I decided to cook the satay after prayers, about 30-40 sticks. Then I personally wrapped them and delivered them to their house.
"It was because I saw they were sad on a joyous day like Hari Raya. The village folks eat satay, their neighbours eat satay, but they don't get to eat satay," he said in a video uploaded on his official Facebook page.
Hanafiah said he gave contributions to four to six houses in Kemaman, Terengganu.
"I didn't go into their homes. I only gave contributions at the doorstep.
"I gave some satay, kuih, and duit raya for their children. But because it involves SOP, I accept the compound," said Hanafiah, who is also the Chukai assemblyperson.
Kemaman district police chief Hanyan Ramlan was quoted by Bernama as saying that Hanafiah was fined for visiting several homes during the first day of Raya.
A video of the incident had gone viral on social media.
“We will not compromise with any party found to be violating the SOPs and will take stern action if any violation is committed,” the district police chief had said.
Hanafiah is the second Terengganu executive councillor to be compounded after Agriculture and Agro-based Industry and Rural Development Committee chairperson Dr Azman Ibrahim, who is also the Jabi assemblyperson.
