Syed Saddiq being probed over ‘death in custody’ video

Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman says he will give police his full cooperation.

PETALING JAYA: Former youth and sports minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said he is being probed by police over a video he made about a recent custodial death.

He said he was informed about this yesterday and pledged to give his full cooperation.

He went on to ask why he was being investigated for demanding justice, adding that the police were not his enemy, but “friends and allies”.

“Those who disrespect the rule of law are the ones who I stand firmly against,” he said on TikTok today.

The Muar MP is being probed over a 45-second video he made on April 28 following the death of cow’s milk trader A Ganapathy while in police custody.

In that video, Syed Saddiq said that police brutality was a serious issue and that if such a fate could befall the victims, “it could happen to us”.

He also called for the long-proposed Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC) to be set up.

Today, Syed Saddiq said on the same day he was informed that he was being investigated, the country was hit “by another tragic death under police custody”, referring to security guard Sivabalan Subramaniam.

He said what made Sivabalan’s death more tragic was that it took place in the same police station as the late Ganapathy, adding this was “intolerable”.

“So why investigate an MP who is executing his basic duty in demanding for justice and defending the rule of law? Investigate those who abuse the rule of law, not me.”

Last night, Sivabalan’s family claimed that he died at the Gombak district police headquarters less than an hour after being taken in.

Police had arrested the 42-year-old over an extortion case that happened in 2016.

Gombak district police chief Arifai Tarawe said they would investigate Sivabalan’s death.

Arifai said Sivabalan had difficulty breathing and the Selayang Hospital was called to attend to the emergency.

He said the initial investigation showed that Sivabalan suffered from heart problems and the case had been classified as sudden death, pending a full report from Hospital Kuala Lumpur’s forensic department. - FMT
