Ex-premier Najib Abdul Razak has taken Communications and Multimedia Minister Saifuddin Abdullah to task over the announcement that local telecommunication companies provided free calls from 10pm last night to 10am today, in conjunction with the celebration of Aidilfitri.
"Most plans already include unlimited calls. We've had unlimited calls for a long time. Many have also switched to video calls during the festive season.
"Therefore, I think it is more meaningful to also provide free data for the first three days of Hari Raya so that users can make video calls and also to encourage people to stay at home to avoid violating the government's ban on Raya visits compared to the regular free midnight call offer.
"This is 2021," said Najib, who is also Pekan MP.
Yesterday, in making the announcement, Saifuddin said the free-calls offer, mobilised by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), could be enjoyed by all customers of Celcom, Digi, Maxis, REDtone, TM Unifi, Time dotCom, Tune Talk, U Mobile, Yoodo, and YES.
“Each service provider will provide this free call offer subject to their respective terms and conditions. Customers are advised to contact their respective service providers for any queries on this service offer,” he said.
Saifuddin added that the initiative was intended to help Malaysians to connect and strengthen ties with loved ones and friends, even though visiting activities were not allowed under the movement control order (MCO), which is in effect until June 7, to curb the spread of Covid-19. - Mkini
