PETALING JAYA: Malaysia received more than half a million Covid-19 vaccine doses through the Covax facility today, according to the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef).

In a statement, Unicef said with today’s 559,200 vaccines, the government has so far procured a total of 1,387,200 doses of AstraZeneca through Covax.

“I am delighted that Unicef was able to bring in the vaccines today. This is an example of our contribution to the government’s response to the pandemic,” Unicef’s Malaysia representative Dr Rashed Mustafa Sarwar said.

Covax is a collaboration between the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, the World Health Organization, Vaccine Alliance (Gavi) and Unicef. Covax’s aim is to accelerate the development and production of Covid-19 vaccines and guarantee equal access globally.

Malaysia joined Covax on April 8 to show solidarity and support vaccine equity.

It was previously reported that the vaccines in the Covax portfolio were AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson, Moderna and Pfizer. Sinovac and Sinopharm were recently added in the initiative. - FMT
