No need for MyTravelPass approval for some travellers

Malaysians are exempted from applying for MyTravelPass for studies, attending deaths and meeting spouses who are abroad.

PETALING JAYA: An exemption from having to apply for MyTravelPass (MTP) has been given for certain travellers by the immigration department, starting from Oct 1.

In a press statement, the department said citizens who wish to leave the country for specific reasons need not apply for MTP approval.

They include new and old students travelling abroad to study or sit for examinations, alongside two escorts, attending to emergencies such as deaths or critical illness, and meeting their spouses abroad if their marriages were registered overseas.

Those participating in sports events, seminars, meetings and humanitarian aid missions are also exempted.

The department clarified that Malaysian and foreign diplomats do not need to apply for the MTP under the ruling.

The immigration department launched the MTP system in October last year to make it easier and faster for Malaysians and foreigners to apply for entry or exit permits during the Covid-19 period.

Before that, applications to enter or exit the country by Malaysians and foreigners were done through emails. The department was handling 5,000 to 6,000 emails daily at that time.
