KUALA LUMPUR: A fire broke out at the Petronas liquefied natural gas (LNG) complex in Bintulu, Sarawak, yesterday but operations were not affected.

The national oil company said the fire occurred at the sea-cooling water outfall channel located outside the complex’s process area and was extinguished, Reuters reported.

Five contractors sustained injuries and were sent to hospital for treatment but have all been discharged, it quoted Petronas as saying in a statement.

An investigation has started on the cause of the fire.

The Bintulu plant has a production capacity of about 30 million tonnes per annum and supplies customers in Japan and China, among others.

Reuters said the fire comes as LNG prices have surged due to a global supply crunch. Asian spot LNG prices spiked to over US$32 per million British thermal units (MMBtu) on Tuesday, the third highest on record. - FMT
