Revoking an elderly motorist's license should be a last resort, said Transport Minister Wee Ka Siong.
He said removing a license just because of age would be discriminatory, and hence ageing motorists should instead have their fitness on the road tested.
"Withdrawing or limiting a valid license based on their age should be a last resort after verifying the person's fitness to drive with a recognised test.
"Many drivers far over the age of 70 display greater competence in driving compared to their younger peers," he said in a video message posted on social media today.
Yesterday, Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department director Azisman Alias had suggested that senior citizens undergo a medical check-up to ensure they are fit to get a driving licence in order to reduce the number of car accidents.
Inspector-General of Police Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani had dismissed this as a personal suggestion.
While acknowledging that ageing drivers were a worldwide issue, Wee said any decisions must be done after thorough and inclusive discussions with all stakeholders.
He said there are many things to consider including mobility needs for the elderly whether they be drivers or motorcyclists.
"We must consider the need for a vehicle to either earn an income or to visit a medical clinic," he said. - Mkini
