PETALING JAYA: The Election Commission (EC) said today it has received an official notice about the dissolution of the Melaka state assembly and will meet to discuss the issue.
In a statement, EC secretary Ikmalrudin Ishak said that, according to Article 19 of the state constitution, an election must be held within 60 days of the dissolution.
“Due to this, the EC will hold a special meeting to discuss the election. The date for the meeting will be informed later,” he said.
Earlier today, Melaka Yang di-Pertua Negeri Mohd Ali Rustam said he had dissolved the state assembly following the retraction of support for chief minister Sulaiman Md Ali by four state assemblymen, rendering his government without a majority.
The current administration will remain as caretaker government until the state polls.
Yesterday, former Melaka chief minister and Sungai Udang assemblyman Idris Haron announced that the state government had fallen.
Along with Idris, former DAP man Norhizam Hassan Baktee (Pengkalan Batu), Bersatu’s Noor Effandi Ahmad (Telok Mas) and Umno’s Nor Azman Hassan (Pantai Kundor) had also retracted their support for the state government. - FMT
