SEPANG: The Women, Family and Community Development Ministry has launched "Skuad Waja", an anti-crime movement meant to unite and empower women against violence.
Its minister, Datuk Seri Rina Mohd Harun said the programme was meant to raise awareness and encourage victims to seek help.
"The establishment of Skuad Waja was announced by former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin during the 2021 Women's Day celebration on March 8.
"Skuad Waja will be the backbone of the ministry's new strength in achieving the 'Keluarga Malaysia' agenda as aspired by the new prime minister in the 12th Malaysia Plan," she told reporters when met at the Skuad Waja launching at KIP Mall here this evening.
Rina said to date the squad had about 30,000 volunteers nationwide and has attended to 775 cases.
She also said the ministry hoped to recruit at least 100,000 Skuad Waja members, both women and men by year-end.
"The involvement of men in Skuad Waja is highly encouraged as it gives the impression that the issue of tackling violence against women is everyone's responsibility."
She said each squad member would be given guidance through the Skuad Waja Module which was developed by the ministry in collaboration with the Malaysian Social Institute to help them provide initial assistance to victims.
"While members may not be professionally qualified, they can still play an important role by providing psychosocial support to any woman in trouble, especially in the initial stages.
"They can help make a difference by being a good listener and if needed, escalate the case to qualified counsellors under the ministry."
Rina also added that some of the squad members had also been given basic psychosocial training to help them interact better with victims.
Rina urged Malaysians aged 18 and above to volunteer for the programme by registering at https://www.rebrand.Iy/pendaftaranskuadWAJA or https://www.jpw.gov.my/ - NST
