Melaka rebels crushed after causing state elections

Three of the four “rebel” assemblymen: Idris Haron, Nor Azman Hassan, Norhizam Hassan Baktee.

PETALING JAYA: Three former state assemblymen were handily defeated today in their attempts to be re-elected after having caused a confidence crisis last month which brought about the state elections.

Former chief minister Idris Haron of Umno, who joined PKR and contested on the Pakatan Harapan ticket, narrowly lost in Asahan seat to Barisan Nasional’s Fairul Nizam Roslan.

Noor Azman Hassan, also formerly with Umno, joined Amanah and contested as a PH candidate in Pantai Kundor, came in third with 1,752 votes, well behind the candidates from BN and Perikatan Nasional.

Maverick politician Norhizam Hassan Baktee who contested as an independent candidate after having left DAP last year, also suffered a crushing defeat, polling only 1,218 votes in his attempt to retain the Pengkalan Batu seat.

A fourth former assemblyman, Noor Effandi Ahmad, did not contest in Telok Mas. The seat was won by BN’s Abdul Razak Abdul Rahman who handily defeated state Perikatan Nasional leader Mohd Rafiq Naizamohideen.

In October, the four assemblymen had withdrawn support from chief minister Sulaiman Md Ali, which led to the dissolution of the state assembly and the fresh elections being called.

Sulaiman was re-elected in Lundu with a thumping 3,104-vote majority and is set to return as chief minister, while state Umno leader. Melaka BN chairman Ab Rauf Yusoh, who was alleged to be a puppet-master of the state government, won a close race in Tanjung Bidara, narrowly defeating Perikatan Nasional’s chief ministerial candidate Mas Ermieyati Samsudin. - FMT
