Covid-19 deaths (Jan 29): 12 reported fatalities, total at 31,952

 

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry reported a total of 12 new Covid-19 fatalities yesterday (Jan 28), bringing the cumulative death toll to 31,952.

The deaths were in Johor (3), Perak (3), Pahang (2), Sabah (2), Malacca (1) and Selangor (1).

No new deaths were reported in Kedah, Kelantan, Negeri Sembilan, Perlis, Penang, Sarawak, Terengganu, Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya.

An average of 17 Covid-19 deaths was reported daily in the last 30 days compared to the seven-day average of 12, indicating a downward trend.

To date, 754 Covid-19 deaths have been reported this month.

A total of 1,174 Covid-19 deaths were reported last December, 1,612 in last November, 2,704 in last October and 9,678 in last September.

Malaysia has the highest number of deaths per capita in the Asean and East Asian regions with 967 deaths per 1 million population.

Infections on the rise

As of yesterday, there were 50,030 active Covid-19 cases. This is an increase of 16.8 percent from the 42,843 active infections a week ago.

Compared to 30 days ago, the number of active cases has increased by 20 percent from 41,682.

From the 5,522 new cases yesterday, a total of 632 of them could be traced to ongoing Covid-19 clusters.

From the cluster-linked cases, 381 (60.3 percent) were from education institutions while 243 (38.4 percent) were from workplaces.

The remaining cases were traced to clusters related to high-risk groups such as old folks homes (5 - 0.8 percent) and community transmissions (3 - 0.5 percent).
