PETALING JAYA: A senior citizen who was allegedly roughed up by Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) enforcement officers has claimed trial at the magistrates’ court here to a charge of obstructing government officials from carrying out their duties.

Patrick Khoo, 69, is alleged to have prevented MBPJ enforcement officers from carrying out their duties during an operation to capture stray dogs last week.

He pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to him before magistrate Shahril Anuar Ahmad Mustapa.

Khoo was charged under Section 186 of the Penal Code. If convicted, he may face a jail term of up to two years or a maximum fine of RM10,000, or both.

Magistrate Shahril Anuar ordered bail of RM2,000 in one surety.

The incident was reported to have occurred at Taman Kanagapuram, Petaling Jaya, at around 9pm on March 22.

Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Farhanah Fuad sought bail of RM5,000 in one surety.

Lawyer Rajsurian Pillai, who was assisted by lawyer Tay Chee Fu, requested a lower bail, citing his client’s age and saying that Khoo had cooperated fully in investigations.

The case has been fixed for further mention on June 16.
