JKMPay cashless welfare aid discontinued

In March last year, about 100 persons with disabilities gathered to demand that the government do away with the cashless payment scheme and reinstate the cash allowance.

PETALING JAYA: The women, family and community development ministry has decided to discontinue the cashless welfare assistance payment scheme or JKMPay.

The ministry said the decision was made after the social welfare department (JKM) conducted a study of the scheme and a pilot project was implemented for seven months.

“Based on the findings, the ministry has decided to stop the JKMPay programme for the time being.

“All welfare aid recipients will receive their cash aid through their bank accounts,” the minister said in a parliamentary written reply to a question from Tenom MP Riduan Rubin on whether the government would continue with the programme.

JKMPay was launched last April by former minister Rina Harun. Half of the approved cash aid to recipients was to be distributed through the cashless card.

The programme, launched with the cooperation of Bank Islam Malaysia Bhd, allowed the cashless card to be used at stores registered with the bank.

OKU Sentral president senator Ras Adiba Radzi had also urged the ministry to scrap the implementation of JKMPay as it was difficult for recipients to make purchases. - FMT
