I’m ready to work with Dr M, says Muhyiddin

PETALING JAYA: Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin says he is ready to work with former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad for the sake of “race, religion and country”.

Muhyiddin, who is also Perikatan Nasional chairman, claimed that the Malay-Muslim community in Malaysia were at a crossroads following recent political developments, though he did not elaborate.

He also did not explicitly state the form of cooperation he was ready to forge with Mahathir, who is currently a member of Putra, a party led by long-time ally Ibrahim Ali.

Yesterday, MalaysiaNow quoted Mahathir as saying he was ready to work with Muhyiddin again, provided the pair could reach a consensus on the objectives they hope to achieve together.

The two former Umno leaders’ relationship had soured in February 2020 over the Sheraton Move that led to the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government, in which Mahathir was prime minister.

Mahathir had described Muhyiddin, who took over as prime minister, as a “traitor”. He then resigned from his post as Bersatu chairman.

However, prior to the 15th general election (GE15) last November, Mahathir said he was willing to forget Muhyiddin’s betrayal so that his Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA) coalition of Bumiputera parties and NGOs, and PN could work together in taking on PH and Barisan Nasional (BN).

This proposed pact did not materialise and GTA, which included Pejuang, lost in every seat it contested.

Mahathir has since left both Pejuang and GTA, having started a new movement, called the “Malay Proclamation”, inviting Malay leaders from all parties, NGOs, and other organisations to support the declaration.
