Sarawak rep lets slip Monday swearing in for new governor

A Sarawak assemblyperson has let slip that the swearing-in ceremony for the next Sarawak governor will be held on Monday.

Pending lawmaker Violet Yong posted on Facebook today that she would be attending the event.

Malaysiakini is contacting Yong for further details.

When contacted, Yong said she received the invitation two days ago.

“No name was mentioned as to who is the new governor (in the invitation),” she said.

Separately, The Borneo Post reported that it had sighted an invitation letter for a parade in connection with the appointment of a new governor.

The news portal also reported that it had learned that the name of the new governor would be announced tomorrow after an appointment letter is presented at the Istana Negara.

Sarawak’s current governor Abdul Taib Mahmud is supposed to end his third term in office at the end of February.

He was first appointed to the role in 2014 after 33 years as Sarawak’s chief minister.

Speculation is rife that veteran Sarawak politician Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar will be his successor.

Wan Junaidi is reported to have submitted his resignation as Dewan Negara president last week. - Mkini
