PUTRAJAYA: Tanjong Karang MP Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi’s decision to support Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim proves that the government is in a stable position, says government spokesman Fahmi Fadzil.

Earlier today, Zulkafperi became the sixth MP from Bersatu to publicly back Anwar, who now has the support of 153 out of 222 MPs.

“Some groups keep saying that the government will topple anytime soon, but the reality seems far from it,” said Fahmi at a press conference today.

“We won’t force anyone to support us, but if it comes, we will accept it. The government is stable.

“Perhaps what Bukit Gantang said is true, but we’ll wait and see,” added the communications minister.

Earlier this month, Bukit Gantang MP Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal, who was one of the five Bersatu MPs to throw their support behind Anwar last year, said that seven to eight MPs from Perikatan Nasional would follow suit.

“Their approach is to wait for the lower house to resume on Feb 26. They want to wait and observe the political development over the next two months,” he said.

However, he did not reveal their identities.

The other Bersatu MPs who have announced their support for Anwar are Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar), Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan), Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang) and Zahari Kechik (Jeli).

Like the other five MPs, Zulkafperi cited his constituency’s needs for his decision to support Anwar. - FMT
