Welcoming defectors can demoralise loyal members, says Umno leader

PETALING JAYA: Umno should not welcome back defectors into its fold unreservedly as it can demoralise members who have been loyal to the party, says Perak Umno chief Saarani Mohamad.

Saarani said loyalty was extremely important in any organisation, including political parties, and members who have remained faithful to the party should be appreciated.

“We should not demoralise (these loyal members) by simply welcoming those who not only defected but tried to kill off the party,” he said.

Saarani, who is also the Perak menteri besar, was speaking to reporters after launching Central Medicare Sdn Bhd in Teluk Intan today.

He said turncoats and members who had been sacked by the party should go through the proper channels before they are allowed to rejoin Umno.

Saarani said there was no “shortcut” to returning to Umno’s fold, adding that those who are interested in coming back to the party must fill a form and get it it endorsed by the Supreme Council.

“They can’t simply return like that.”

While Saraani did not identify the defectors, several Umno members had jumped ship following the party’s dismal performance in the 14th general election

Yesterday, Umno Supreme Council member Jalaluddin Alias said the party was prepared to welcome back leaders and members who were expelled after the 15th general election.

He said those who remained loyal and aligned with the party’s principles, despite being previously sacked or having their membership revoked, would be given a second chance to rejoin Umno. - FMT
