Defeated MIC vice-presidential candidate cries foul

A MIC leader claimed that the party’s central election for the 2024-2027 term was not free and unbiased.

According to T Mohan, who lost the MIC vice-presidential election, party president and election committee chairperson SA Vigneswaran was not neutral because he also campaigned for a certain candidate.

“How can the chairperson of the election committee campaign for a candidate? This violates the basic principles of free and fair elections in the party,” he said, adding that he was not against the president’s decision to support his own candidate.

Mohan (above, left) previously failed to defend the party's vice-president position for a third term after losing to two incumbents M Asojan, T Murugiah and a new face - Dewan Negara member R Nelson - for three vice-president positions.

Earlier, Vigneswaran denied playing any role in Mohan’s defeat in the party polls.

Free Malaysia Today reported Vigneswaran as saying he himself was surprised by the outcome.

“I have no preference among the candidates running for the position of third vice-president and leave it to the delegates to make their choice without any restrictions," he said.

However, Vigneswaran admitted that he gave Nelson some support, and said the new vice-president was “not in the same league” as the three incumbents.

Despite his unhappiness, Mohan said he was ready to accept the election results.

“I am neither asking for a recount nor am I going to take this matter to the Registrar of Societies.

“My request is that in the future, the president cannot be the selection committee chairperson to avoid conflict of interest,” he said.

He said he would not leave the party or accept any appointed position in the party. - Mkini
