PETALING JAYA: A Malaysian on a business trip to Hong Kong was seriously injured after he was struck on the head by a piece of concrete which fell from a building in bustling Tsim Sha Tsui.

Ng Shu Lin, 44, underwent two surgeries but a residual piece of concrete has yet to be removed from his head, Bernama reported.

His friend, Yap Shy Cuan, said the incident occurred while Ng was headed to a “World Filial Piety” seminar, just hours after they had arrived in Hong Kong on July 4.

Ng was walking on the busy Nathan Road in Tsim Sha Tsui, which is known for having high foot traffic, when a piece of concrete fell from the Yau Lai Building.

“It was shocking. The impact knocked him to the ground and people rushed to help,” Yap was quoted as saying today.

“The second surgery was just yesterday. He is expected to be discharged (from Hong Kong Baptist Hospital) tomorrow.”

Ng, who is weak but in a stable condition, plans to consult a lawyer for legal advice.

Hong Kong media, which reported the incident, said cracks could be seen on the underside of the canopy of the Yau Lai Building, which has been occupied since 1963.

The fire department later removed other loose concrete pieces that were at risk of falling. - FMT
