PETALING JAYA
Youth and sports minister Hannah Yeoh has apologised over the Malaysian contingent’s failure to win the nation’s first Olympic gold at the Paris Games.

Yeoh said her ministry will meet soon to discuss the contingent’s performance in Paris and an audit report will be tabled in Parliament, Astro Awani reported.

“I apologise because we have yet to succeed.

“I am not using the word ‘fail’, because the Road to Gold (RTG) programme was set up not just for the Paris Games but the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics as well.

As I have already said, we will continue supporting our athletes and coaches,
 she said.

Nonetheless, the minister said there were significant improvements in the performance of athletes, with three national records broken, particularly in the men’s 61kg weightlifting as well as the men’s and women’s track cycling sprint events.

Malaysia left the recently concluded Paris Olympics with two bronze medals.

They were won by badminton singles ace Lee Zii Jia and doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik. - FMT
