Video of cat being declawed sparks debate, fury among the online community

ALTHOUGH the domestic cat is known across the world as warm, lovable companions, these felines also have a reputation that comes alongside their sharp claws and preternatural agility.

To manage their behaviour, quite a number of cat owners have taken to declawing their pets. For those not in the know, declawing is a surgical process where the last bone in the cat’s toe is removed.

In an illuminating video by netizen non aesthetic things on X, the tendons and ligaments are also severed.

The video went on to explain that the cat experiences intense pain walking about with their amputated toes as well as struggling with their balance. Horrifyingly, said cat may get arthritis and chronic pain even after they have fully healed.

As predicted, the video has caused quite a firestorm on cyberspace, with many netizens calling out the practice as evil. Netizen Shmol captured the thoughts of the majority with his comment.

On a rather unpopular note, netizen BiffBifford defended the procedure, stating that it caused no health issues.

Another netizen suggested that their claws be trimmed instead.

Acccording to The Humane Society Of The United States, either a scalpel or guillotine clipper is used to amputate the toe of the cat. The wounds are closed with stitches or surgical glue, and the feet are then bandaged.

Another method is laser surgery, in which a beam of light cuts through tissue by heating and vaporising it. Just the description alone would suffice to cause horror among cat lovers. The organisation went on to state that declawing significantly increase the odds of back pain, litter box aversion and biting.

Now that we have it, would anyone still be inclined to declaw their pet cat to avoid their destructive behaviour? – Focus Malaysia
