KUALA LUMPUR: Harimau Malaya are set to be strengthened by the inclusion of seven Malaysia-born players based overseas.
This was shared by Johor Darul Ta'zim club owner Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, following the national team's 2-0 victory over Nepal in an Asian Cup qualifier last Tuesday.
Dutch-born midfielder Hector Hevel made an immediate impact for Harimau Malaya by scoring the opening goal against Nepal, and his impact saw him named Man of the Match.
Tunku Ismail revealed that the addition of seven more Malaysia-born players, based abroad, will enhance the squad's quality.
"The journey is still long. I am confident we will see constant progress and improvement in every aspect. Last night, we saw a solid playing structure and high intensity for the full 90 minutes.
"Seven more Malaysian players abroad will add more quality and help the team. What matters is that our national team compete in top international tournaments and earn respect — our pride and image. To achieve this goal, we must unite and be patient.
"The priority is not the speed, but the direction we are heading," he posted on X.
Harimau Malaya will next meet Asean Cup champions Vietnam in their Asian Cup qualifying second Group F match in Kuala Lumpur on June 10. - NST
