Perlis Mufti Asri Zainul Abidin appears to have drawn parallels between Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s (DBKL) relocation of the Dewi Sri Pathrakaliamman temple in Kuala Lumpur and enforcement action against an unlicensed balloon vendor.
In a Facebook post today, he seemingly compared the two incidents while questioning the local authority’s principles.
“What is clearly ‘haram’ is given all the treatment and replacements, (but) the marhaen on the street are treated without humanity.
“On that side, there is compromise, on this side, there is pushing and defeat. What principles do you accept and measure?” he questioned.
While the religious figure did not specify the events he was referring to, tensions have been running high recently among the public since news broke of plans to demolish the Dewi Sri Pathrakaliamman temple in Kuala Lumpur to make way for a mosque.

The temple’s committee has since confirmed it has reached an agreement with DBKL to relocate the structure along Jalan Munshi Abdullah, off Jalan Masjid India, to a nearby site provided by DBKL.
Certain parties had also lambasted Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa for preventing landowner Jakel Trading from suing the temple committee after 11 years of failed negotiations to relocate from the land the company had purchased from DBKL.
Meanwhile, a viral video of an alleged assault of a balloon seller at Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman last night also incited the ire of some quarters who argue that enforcement officers had acted too harshly against the individual.
Addressing the incident, DBKL said the balloon seller had refused to comply with repeated warnings and was acting aggressively, pushing the enforcement officer who was carrying out their duty.

The city council also said it would conduct further investigations and record statements from all enforcement officers involved in the incident, noting that a police report has been lodged by an officer implicated in the event.
Dang Wangi district police chief Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman said the case is being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant in the discharge of their official functions. - Mkini
