Bentong police chief Zaiham Kahar said the 52-year-old man was remanded today to assist in the investigation under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
Bernama reported that the lorry driver was detained at the Bentong district police headquarters yesterday.
“The driver has a record for four offences. He tested negative for drugs,” Zaiham said in a statement.
Three members of a family were killed and four others injured in the 4.55pm accident involving the five-tonne lorry and four vehicles.
Zaiham said the lorry, travelling from Kuantan to Kuala Lumpur, skidded, struck the road divider and veered into the opposite lane, colliding with the four vehicles.
The driver of one of the cars, Wong Kean Yeap, 29, his sister, Hwee Moon, 34, and their mother, Lee Lai Cheng, 61, died at the scene.
Three other passengers of the car – a 33-year-old man, a five-year-old boy and a three-year-old girl – sustained injuries and were taken to Bentong Hospital.
The drivers and passengers of the other three vehicles, and the 29-year-old lorry attendant were not injured. - FMT
