SOME view buying 4D (four-digit) numbers which has since evolved into 6D and an assortment of related numeric-based jackpot products as a vice and sinful activity that needs to be curbed.
Others, however, see 4D culture and its attendant superstitions as part of local culture and is reflective of a diverse, multi-ethnic population.
The latter was very much in evidence in a post on Magnum4D’s Facebook post which showed a vehicle smashed into the front of a 4D outlet.
Marketing gimmick or otherwise, the post jokingly proclaimed that the accident was the result of the driver’s rush to buy lottery tickets for the RM30 million jackpot.
Luckily, no punters were harmed in the incident with everyone – including driver of the rammed vehicle – able to get their lucky numbers.
The post has generated 1.6k likes, over 222 comments and 355 shares at the time of writing, reflecting Malaysian’s fondness for in the tikam ekor (punting) culture.
Loads were seen enquiring about the vehicle’s registration number, reflecting local superstition that an accident was a forebear to lucky numbers.
With some expressing disappointment that the number was blacked out in pictures and videos.
However, for those who did manage to find out what the number was, they were in for a bigger disappointment as the number was sold out!
A few pointed out that this could be a sign for Magnum to offer drive-thru services.
Given the crowds at some betting shops, especially during “auspicious” dates, some surmised this was the driver’s method of jumping the queue.
Another commenter came to the conclusion that the driver of this vehicle must have a hot tip till he was overly desperate to place his bet before the shop’s 7pm closing.
Perhaps, this was the driver’s method of restricting others from buying up lottery tickets, surmised one netizen.
Always look on the bright side of things. That was the sentiment of one netizen who commended Magnum corporation for seeing the funny side and putting a positive spin on the incident.
Given the light-hearted nature of the post as well as the comments, it shows that many Malaysians regard 4D betting shops very much part of the local landscape.
Everyone can have a good chuckle about it since nob0dy was hurt. But the narrative would be very different if there had been casualties.
For now, the winner – as always – are the betting companies. – Focus Malaysia
