An AirAsia flight heading to Shenzhen, China had to make an emergency turnback to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (KLIA) after one of its two engines caught fire last night.
According to the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department, the Airbus A320-216 aircraft carrying 171 passengers and crew departed for Shenzhen at 9.59pm before it sustained a "pneumatic ducting burst".
Pneumatic ducting is a piping or channelling system that is used on aircraft to transport air and other gases.
Selangor Fire and Rescue assistant director (operations) Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar said the department received an emergency call at 10.37pm before dispatching a team of firefighters from the KLIA station to the airport.
When the team reached KLIA2 at about 10.45pm, the aircraft was reportedly on a holding pattern before it received a green light to proceed for an emergency landing.
Mukhlis said the aircraft's Halon fire suppression system managed to put off the fire before it was successfully landed at KLIA2's runway at 12.08am.
All passengers and crew escaped the incident unhurt.
"...the blaze was distinguished by the aircraft's Halon system and it was identified that the fire was caused by the pneumatic ducting burst.
"Firefighters then evacuated all victims from the aircraft and conducted checks to ensure there was no more risk of fire," Mukhlis told the media in a brief note this morning. - Mkini
