Speaker orders probe into ‘fight’ claims, says will rule on Monday

KUALA LUMPUR: Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul says he will conduct a comprehensive investigation and rule on Monday (Aug 18) over alleged “fight” invitations.

He said he has ordered all audio and video units in the Dewan Rakyat to surrender recordings as evidence.

“If there is evidence of such an act or a threat to fight, I will take stern action,” he said in Parliament on Thursday (Aug 14).

He was responding to Khoo Poay Tiong (PH–Kota Melaka), who sought a ruling on safety after claims an MP invited others to fight outside the chamber.

Johari warned MPs that even if microphones are switched off, Dewan Rakyat cameras remain on.

“I know you are politicians, but if you make physical threats, you cross the red line. I will not accuse anyone now, but I have ordered a thorough investigation and will make a ruling on Monday,” he said.

On Wednesday (Aug 13), the Dewan Rakyat descended into chaos after PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang (PN–Marang) implied Kuala Lumpur’s problems were due to DAP and the unity government.

After a verbal exchange between government backbenchers and DAP MPs, Opposition MPs staged a walkout.
