WANITA MCA secretary-general Chan Quin Er has criticised the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) for investigating Pahang MCA Youth Chief Wong Siew Mun under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
Chan said the move was surprising given the Court of Appeal’s recent ruling in the case of cosmetics entrepreneur Datuk Seri Aliff Syukri Kamarzaman, which found the “annoying harassment” provision unconstitutional.
“The question arises as to why this provision is still being used as the basis for an investigation,” she said on Sunday (Aug 31).
She also questioned the timing of the questioning, noting that it coincided with National Day. “In solidarity, we stand firmly behind Siew Mun. We will not back down,” she added.
Wong, summoned over a TikTok video on the Urban Renewal Bill, stressed she was merely highlighting facts.
“The facts stated in the video were not fabricated, but based on facts drawn directly from the bill. I also offered suggestions to strengthen the bill,” she said.
MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong further questioned the urgency. “Why is Wong Siew Mun being summoned to MCMC during a long public holiday?” he wondered.— Focus Malaysia
