TUMPAT: Every Merdeka, tree cutter Syamsuddin Mohd Tahir turns his three-wheeled motorcycle into more than just transport – it becomes a moving symbol of family pride and patriotism.

At the 68th Merdeka Day celebration at Padang KTMB last night, the 44-year-old once again joined the colourful parade under the Program Jiwa Komuniti Madani with his trusted coley, transformed into a dazzling patriotic display.

A coley is a colloquial term, especially in Kelantan and some northern states, for a motorised three-wheeler used for daily chores and odd jobs.

Together with his wife, Sakinah Amin, 39, and their four children aged between 12 and three, Syamsuddin spent three nights adorning the modest vehicle with the Jalur Gemilang, flower garlands and other decorations, at a cost of nearly RM100.

"This coley is part of our daily life. I use it for tree cutting jobs, collecting recyclables and even helping neighbours clean their homes.

"But every Merdeka, we want to give it a different meaning – to show our love for the country.

"My wife and children always help me with the decorations. It's our family tradition now," said Syamsuddin, from Kampung Kok Keli.

Syamsuddin has taken part in the annual decorated vehicle parade for the past four years, often returning home with prizes including first, second and third places. This year, he was among 22 participants vying for cash prizes.

For him, however, the greatest reward is the joy and pride on his children's faces.

"They look forward to this every year. It is not about winning, it's about teaching them to love Malaysia," he said with a smile, while Sakinah, a housewife, nodded in agreement by his side.
