Cops receive report on TikTok account allegedly posing as politician

Police have received a report from a politician, who is also the Padang Umno division chief, over a fake TikTok account allegedly impersonating him to carry out a financial scam.

Kedah deputy police chief Baderulhisham Baharudin said the 50-year-old victim lodged the report at noon yesterday.

He stated that at 10.30pm on Sunday, the victim was informed of two TikTok accounts using his name, photo, and voice, which were believed to have been generated using AI.

“The two accounts registered under the names tiktok.com/@chegumadi and tiktok.com/@cheggumadi are believed to have been created by irresponsible parties for financial scam purposes. The content could also mislead the public,” he said in a statement today.

Baderulhisham said the victim was also concerned that the accounts would be used to deceive the public in matters involving financial aid.

“Police, particularly the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID), urge the public to remain vigilant against online scams promising financial assistance. Do not be easily swayed by offers or appeals made through videos featuring politicians or celebrities.

“Checks can be made via Bukit Aman CCID’s Semak Mule application, or by contacting the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) at 997 for verification,” he added.
