Akmal slams gov’t for allowing alcohol at Chinese school events

UMNO Youth has criticised the government’s decision to maintain the policy allowing alcoholic beverages to be served at public events held within Chinese vernacular school premises (SJKC).

Its chief, Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh, said the recurring issue of drunk driving should serve as a warning to strengthen education and prevention efforts instead of normalising alcohol consumption in schools.

He also questioned why Prime Minister (PM) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s earlier stance — that educational institutions should not be used for drinking — was no longer applied.

“I also ask that the government explain why the PM’s original position is no longer being applied. Does the government think that alcohol consumption brings benefits to the people, whether from a health or social perspective?

“If so, please explain, because perhaps the people have been unaware of these supposed benefits all this time,” he said in a post on social media on Saturday.

Akmal accused the government of bowing to political pressure, warning: “Don’t make wrong decisions for the next generation just because you fear losing votes.”

The Cabinet recently decided to retain existing guidelines permitting alcohol at SJKC halls for public events. —  Focus Malaysia
