MUAR: A night raid at a hotel here ended with the arrest of a university student couple for alleged khalwat (close proximity).
Johor Islamic Religious Affairs Department (JAINJ) enforcement officers detained the pair about 1am after knocking repeatedly on the hotel room door for more than 15 minutes without a response.
When officers gained access to the room using a duplicate key, they found a man in shorts and a T-shirt attempting to open the door, while a woman in a sleeveless batik nightgown was found on the bed partially covered by a blanket.
Investigations revealed both were in their 20s, unmarried and university students.
The two claimed the woman was unable to enter her hostel and the man merely accompanied her to the hotel "to use the restroom".
Officers discovered the woman's clothes in the wardrobe and used tissues in the bin, fuelling suspicion of an illicit stay.
The couple was detained under Section 27 of the Johor Syariah Criminal Offences Enactment 1997 for khalwat and taken to the JAINJ office for further investigation.
If convicted, they face fines or disciplinary action by their university. - NST
