Gerakan has set its sights on contesting Api-Api as one of the three seats it plans to field candidates in for the upcoming Sabah state election.
Party deputy president Oh Tong Keong, at a press conference in Penang today, reportedly said Gerakan’s election team has identified potential candidates, and their names will be submitted to the leadership for consideration.
He also noted that Gerakan, now a Perikatan Nasional component, could not afford to sit out the polls, adding, “It is pointless to practise if you don’t contest in any matches.”
Api-Api is currently held by the Sabah Tourism, Culture, and Environment Minister, Christina Liew, from PKR.
She is serving her third term in the constituency, which comprises 43.5 percent Chinese voters and 40.1 percent Sabah bumiputera voters.
Api-Api is one of two state constituencies under the Kota Kinabalu parliamentary constituency, and has historically been a hotly contested urban seat.

Liew first captured it in 2013 before defending it in 2018 and 2020.
The area’s mixed electorate has seen competition from DAP, PBS, LDP, and Gerakan over the years.
Gerakan has been lobbying to contest a handful of urban seats in Kota Kinabalu as part of its strategy to rebuild its presence in Sabah.
However, its prospects remain uncertain given the dominance of established players like DAP, PKR, Warisan, and PBS. - Mkini
