
KUALA LUMPUR: A moderate earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale hit the Philippine islands today.
However, the 9.34am quake did not pose a tsunami threat to Malaysia, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) said.
It said the epicentre of the earthquake was some 144km west of Tagum City in Mindanao, at a depth of 49km.
"Initial assessments found no tsunami threat to Malaysia following the incident," MetMalaysia said in a statement.
It said it would issue further statements if there were any developments.
A series of earthquakes and tremors have hit the Philippines of late, especially in Mindanao and other southern areas of the country. - FMT
