KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor Pas commissioner Datuk Dr Ab Halim Tamuri has pledged that the party will not immediately shut down betting outlets if it wins the state election.
Speaking to China Press, Halim, who is Paya Jaras assemblyman, said not all policies from Pas-governed states like Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah and Perlis can be applied in Selangor as the state has a multiracial population.
He said the state's diversity and community structure demanded a distinct approach to administration.
"For example, if an area has a 99 per cent Malay population, then why would there be a need to sell alcohol?
"So when it comes to governance, all matters must go through consultation and discussion. Only after that can decisions be made."
He dismissed claims that betting outlets would be immediately closed if Pas were to govern the state, adding that decisions must be made through consensus in a democratic country.
Halim dismissed doubts about Pas' ability to govern urban areas, pointing out that his constituency, Paya Jaras, had a mix of urban and rural areas, including Sungai Buloh New Town and Saujana Utama.
He said Pas had many professionals from various backgrounds who could help the party build a better government. - NST
