Video captures disastrous moment when a lorry driver forgets the height limit

THERE is a whole world of difference between driving a car and a huge, long lorry. In fact, some Malaysians have taken to calling lorry drivers as land pilots, due to the size of the vehicle, which up to a certain extent resembles a plane.

These drivers need a class E license too with more stringent requirements that normal car drivers do not need to fulfill.

It takes plenty of consideration for a lorry driver to turn a sharp corner. And occasionally, lorry drivers need to be aware of the height of their vehicle too, especially if they tend to stack their goodies at the rear.

But it seems the lorry driver in this video will learn this lesson the hard way. According to netizen @HobinJangHobin_ who posted the video, the lorry which was laden with yellow drums could be seen trying to cross a low bridge.

The result was as disastrous as it was educational, for it reminds us drivers never to tail these cumbersome vehicles too closely from behind. Anything can happen and fortunately, the white car in the video was just a short but safe distance away.

The brief video did not reveal if anyone was hurt during the scene, but we can all predict the massive clean up required to return the flow of traffic to normal.

This scene underscores the high level of accidents involving heavy vehicles and the horrific deaths associated with them.

While it takes a good deal of responsibility and awareness to pilot these vehicles, it seems that Malaysian drivers are becoming less so.

On another note, it is interesting to note that to stop a fully loaded 80,000-pound semi-truck traveling at 65 mph, a driver requires approximately 525 feet (about 5-6 seconds) to stop it, a distance roughly equivalent to two football fields. Driving a heavy vehicle is no walk in the park, and the faster Malaysian lorry drivers know this, the better. — Focus Malaysia
