Maimunah Sharif is set to join a major government-linked company in the capital.

Chief secretary Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar said the decision, approved by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim, will allow Maimunah to be appointed to a major government-linked company responsible for developing a new landmark project in the capital.
“This decision takes into account the needs (of the GLC), as well as her expertise and experience in sustainable urban planning, particularly during her leadership at UN-Habitat as an executive director,” he said.
“Maimunah has set high standards during her tenure leading Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), enhancing its service delivery based on the principles of integrity, efficiency, and effectiveness.”
Maimunah was appointed as the Kuala Lumpur mayor in August last year, becoming the first woman to occupy the post.
Shamsul highlighted that DBKL achieved a RM27.6 million surplus last year after recording deficits of RM75.3 million in 2023 and RM283 million in 2022.
He said the strong turnaround – a 137% increase – reflected Maimunah’s “transformative leadership” which is focused on improving financial governance through prudent, efficient, and strategic expenditure management practices.
Shamsul also noted that Maimunah had elevated DBKL’s international profile through Kuala Lumpur’s globalisation initiatives, establishing strategic collaborations with Unicef, and successfully hosting key Asean programmes in conjunction with Malaysia’s chairmanship of the regional bloc this year.
Maimunah also launched various green and sustainable urban programmes to make Kuala Lumpur a zero-carbon, liveable, and climate-resilient city, including the Zero Waste Initiative, Green Circle Initiative, and Urban Climate Resilience Programme (UCRP), said Shamsul.
He also noted that Maimunah has received numerous individual awards at the domestic and international levels for her ongoing efforts to drive urban innovation, which culminated in the Leadership Award at the World Smart City Awards 2025 in Barcelona earlier this month.
“Based on these achievements and her outstanding leadership, the government believes that Maimunah’s new appointment will ensure that Kuala Lumpur’s landmark projects will be carried out successfully and are in line with the government’s aspirations for Kuala Lumpur.
“On behalf of the government, I extend my highest appreciation and gratitude to Maimunah for her services, dedication, and exceptional legacy in elevating DBKL’s profile.”
Maimunah, who has a degree in urban planning from Cardiff University, worked as a town planner at the Penang Island Municipal Council in 1985 before rising through the ranks to become planning department director in 2003.
She was promoted as the first general manager of George Town World Heritage Inc, the state agency that manages the Unesco world heritage site, in 2009.
Maimunah was appointed the Seberang Perai municipal council president in 2011 and later served briefly as Penang Island City Council mayor in 2017.
The following year, she assumed the role of UN-Habitat executive director, becoming the first Asian woman to hold the office. - FMT
