RAWANG: Police have detained a 54-year-old man on suspicion of having raped a teenage girl in Bandar Tasik Puteri two days ago.
Gombak police chief Assistant Commissioner Noor Ariffin Mohamad Nasir said the rape was reported at 8.15pm the same day.
It was reported by the 35-year-old mother of the victim.
"The girl was allegedly raped by a man whom she knew. Following the report, a team from the Gombak Criminal Investigation Department arrested the suspect," he said in a statement.
Noor Ariffin said checks showed that the suspect did not have a criminal record, adding that police had already obtained a remand order to detain the man to facilitate investigations.
He said the case was being investigated under Section 376 of the Penal Code for rape, which carries a jail term of up to 20 years and whipping upon conviction.
