The PN chief whip says 61 opposition MPs have agreed that the former Bersatu deputy president should become the new opposition leader effective today.

In the letter sighted by FMT, Takiyuddin said the decision follows Kemaman MP Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar’s resignation as opposition leader. He said Johari was notified about this on June 10.
“Sixty-one opposition MPs agree that Hamzah be appointed the new opposition leader effective today,” Takiyuddin said.
“We appreciate your cooperation in this matter and we thank you for your consideration,” added the Kota Bharu MP.
The list of 61 MPs was attached to the letter.
FMT has reached out to Takiyuddin and Johari for comment.
On Tuesday, Johari told FMT that he had not received any notification from the opposition bloc about Hamzah’s return as opposition leader.
PN chairman Samsuri succeeded Hamzah as the opposition leader last month after the latter was sacked from Bersatu amid a leadership tussle between him and party president Muhyiddin Yassin.
However, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang on Saturday said that Hamzah, who was the former Bersatu deputy president, would return as the opposition leader, just two months after relinquishing the post.
Speaking at the Reset convention in Tanah Merah, Kelantan, Hadi said PAS had sought the views of its MPs as well as the MPs aligned with Hamzah, including 13 who were still with Bersatu.
Hadi’s announcement comes after PAS ended its political cooperation with Bersatu on June 8. Muhyiddin then stated that the party was ready to challenge PAS at upcoming state polls “on all fronts”.
However, both parties remain components of PN — which removed two senior Bersatu leaders from key posts in the opposition coalition last night. -FMT
