PAS MUKTAMAR | PAS Youth delegates have urged the Islamist party to spearhead Muslim unity efforts starting from its mission to wrest control of Putrajaya, saying it has no shortage of candidates capable of becoming prime minister.
As such, Kedah PAS Youth leader Ilyas Ahmad said PAS should stop making way for prime minister candidates from other parties.
“We don’t want to hear any more talk of ‘never mind, let someone else become prime minister’; we don’t want to hear that anymore! This time, we want to ensure that PAS will be the main leader at the federal level,” Ilyas (above) said.
He said this while debating the PAS Youth chief’s policy speech at the party’s muktamar in Kota Bharu today.
Terengganu PAS Youth delegate Mukhlis Hasin echoed similar sentiments as his Kedah peer, asserting that the party should lead unity efforts rather than merely acting as a “follower”.
“Do not ever be afraid to defend our identity purely for the sake of defending unity instead. We should not be afraid of defending the truth just to defend this unity,” he said in his debate.
He added that PAS Youth plays a role in not just uniting members at the grassroots level, but also ensuring that the party’s leadership has the readiness to make any unity a success.
“The biggest challenge for us in leading this unity is that sometimes, children (party members) want to unite, but their fathers (party leaders) have needs and reasons that cause the unity to not be carried out well,” he said.
PAS-Umno pact
In the run-up to the July 11 Johor polls, BN chairperson and Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi told Sin Chew Daily that if he were to become prime minister, he would pursue three objectives regarding the economy, fair education, and national security.
Following the coalition’s resounding success at the state election, it later developed an electoral alliance with PAS under Perikatan Nasional under the Muslim unity banner.
There has yet to be any official announcement on their potential collaboration for the upcoming Malacca polls.
Earlier today, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang told reporters that the party is ready for the 16th general election, even if it is held earlier than scheduled.
His remarks came after Zahid voiced support for an earlier GE16 to allow the government to establish a fresh mandate from the rakyat.
Zahid, who is the deputy prime minister, is also expected to attend the central PAS muktamar tomorrow, nearly a decade since he last attended the opposition party’s annual meeting.
‘PAS will lead’
In his winding-up speech at the PAS Youth muktamar, chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden said "important figures" in private and government sectors have consistently sought PAS' input on the party's potential moves if it were to assume federal power.
"When we ask why they ask us that, these people answer: 'because in our discussions, we see that after GE16, there's no other choice; PAS will lead the federal government'.
"This view doesn't only come from within the country, but is also formed from delegations from abroad who visit our country," Afnan claimed.
He asserted that such individuals also said that based on "facts, figures, and data" collected, all the information indicated that PAS would form a government after the general election.
"All these views are carrying PAS towards winning the election, holding the reins of power in Putrajaya, (and) becoming part of the government together with our coalition partners. That is PAS' position today," he said.
He theorised that PAS has achieved such attention as it retains strengths not held by other political parties such as Pakatan Harapan components PKR, DAP, and Amanah.
"All the parties sitting in government today are experiencing a crisis of confidence among the rakyat, with the people increasingly losing trust in the government.
"Why don't people trust the government? Because of flip-flop policies, because (they use) politics only as a tool for power without any real purpose," he asserted.
In particular, he pointed to the government's move to release the royal commission of inquiry's report on Tabung Haji over three years after it was completed in 2022. - Mkini
