Electoral watchdog Bersih today accused the Election Commission (EC) of bulldozing the redelineation process before the general election, despite having ample time to complete it.
In a statement, Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah cited the timeline of EC's case in the court as an example.
"On Dec 7, 2017, the KL High Court dismissed the Selangor case (redelineation), but a stay, pending an appeal was granted. On Dec 18, the EC appealed to the Court of Appeal against the stay, and succeeded.
"Between Dec 27 and Jan 9, EC held local inquiries, and on Jan 15, it released second display.
"All this in a matter of one month, although the EC has until Sept 2018 to complete the process. It is obvious that they want to get this passed before the general elections," she said.
Maria added that Bersih's preliminary analysis also showed that EC has reversed most of its proposed changes in the first display, without correcting issues of malapportionment and gerrymandering.
"Malapportionment is still high on the second display. The largest state seat of Seri Serdang has 74,563 voters, while the smallest, Sungai Air Tawar, has 15,033 voters. The difference is five times.
"Likewise for Parliament. The largest parliamentary seat of Kapar has 146,317 voters and the smallest, Sabak Bernam, has 37,126 voters. That's a four times difference."
She then urged Selangor voters to object to the redelineation's second display in large numbers.- Mkini
