Potential BN candidates for the 14th general election are presently being filtered by integrity, deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced today.
Zahid, who is the coalition’s deputy chairperson, said extra attention was being paid to those who were caught up in graft and abuse of power allegations.
“All states have sent complete lists of candidates for parliament and state assembly seats, however, efforts to filter them based on integrity are being done thoroughly.
“Integrity is a main criterion in the selection of candidates.
“Those who are caught... and involved in corruption, abuse of power or have personalities that are contradictory to the law or to religion will be given attention.
“As we know, voters will also be looking at the personalities (of these candidates)...to see if they are clean and if they are seen to be clean,” he said at a press conference after the launch of two integrity-themed books in Kuala Lumpur today.
The books, “Nilai Integriti Pelbagai Agama” (Integrity in different religions) and “Modul Integriti Prasekolah” (An Integrity Module for Pre-schools) were produced by the Malaysian Institute of Integrity.
Last year, several BN politicians were in the spotlight for graft allegations, including Johor Menteri Besar Khaled Nordin, former Johor state executive councillor and Endau assemblyperson Abd Latif Bandi, and an unnamed Malacca Umno politician.
The filtration process was being done by a “special unit” within BN, assisted by several agencies, including the MACC.
Those who fail to pass this “integrity test” will be shown the door, added Zahid.
“We will tell them goodbye.
“For these parliament and state assembly seats, we have a complete list...we also have ‘calon simpanan’ (reserved candidates) whom we are testing based on whether they will be accepted by voters and their winnability.
“Integrity is key component enveloping these criteria,” he added.- Mkini
