Clarify status of voters living overseas, Bersih urges EC

PETALING JAYA: Bersih 2.0 chairman Maria Chin Abdullah has asked Putrajaya to clarify certain issues faced by registered Malaysian voters staying overseas.
She said she had received complaints that the voters were unable to get proper answers from the Election Commission (EC).
Conflicting reports were causing confusion among Bersih members living overseas, she added.
Maria said those who had been allowed to do advance voting or be postal voters in the 13th general election (GE13) were unsure whether they needed to reapply again for GE14.
Some of the voters also want to know whether they will get advance notice of the GE14 date so that they can come back home to vote.
They need to make plans and save up for the trip, she added.
There have also been appeals from voters overseas to local airlines — AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines — to offer special deals for Malaysians coming home to vote, Maria said.
Maria said some Bersih members overseas were in the dark about their status as voters as some had registered online.
“Nobody can give them a straight answer. The onus lies on the EC.
“They cannot wait until the day of dissolution of Parliament to announce whether Malaysians overseas need to return home to vote.”
Furthermore, she asked the EC to clarify if outsiders would be allowed to observe the voting process overseas, as was allowed during GE13 in 2013.
“The process was unclear at the time as some could go in to observe while others were barred. EC needs to clear all these matters.”- FMT
